I
INTRODUCTION
A model of teaching consist of guidelines for
designing educational activities and environments. Models of teaching are meant
for creating suitable learning environment. They provide specifications for
constructing learning situations. Each model represents one views of what is
important to learn and how it should be learned. Model of teaching from general
approaches of teaching in that they are designed to realize specific
instructional objectives. For example to help children attain concepts there is
the concept attainment model to teach scientific enquiry there is the Inquiry
Training model and to teach creative writing there is the synthetic model.
Different models of teaching strategies are required to realize different
instructional goals.
Among these concept attainments Model have more
important. It is one of the effective models to help children attain concepts,
concept attainment model or CAM belongs to information processing model family.
All the 23 families identified by Bruce Joyce and Marsha weil in 1980. Major
theorists of CAM are Jerome. S.Bruner. 3 Variations of CAM was identified.
These are reception oriented model, Selection
oriented model, unorganized model of concept attainment. Each concept has a set
of elements. A concept is attained when all the elements of the concept are
correctly identified and learnt. Name, Attributes, Examples etc are the
elements of the concept.

NEED AND SIGNIFICANTS
Traditional model of teaching that still following
in our colleges and school with big classes are lecture method. It has lot of
merits but in the case of the effectiveness of the class depend upon the
activeness and interest of the children. Children wants abstract thinking and
the form of the content will alive in their mind, and for help the child to
attain the concept, concept attainment model is essential. The concept about
the content is more effectively stand in the mind of the student through this
concept attainment model. Now a day this model of teaching needs very important
in the teaching profession. So the study about it has significant in this
situation.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
The present study is entitled as “ A STUDY ON THE EFFECTIVENESS OF CAM OVER
TRADITIONAL METHOD“

DEFENITION OF KEY TERMS
1.
CAM - Concept Attainment Model. It is a type of
model of teaching especially it helps
the children to attain concept.

OBJECTIVES OF STUDY
To
study the effectiveness of the Concept Attainment Model among the students.

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS
It has a lot of scope. Now a day, CAM like model has
it’s own importance. Traditional method has a lot of limitation, so the model
of teaching gives more opportunity to all teachers. CAM helps the student to
attain the concept. It consist of guidelines for designing educational activities
and environment. So undoubtfully says that it simplify the hard topic and
create suitable environment and learning more suitable. So, children gets a
mental representation or mental picture of some object or experience.
At the same time it has some
limitations also. It gives one chance to the children to realize the concept of
objects only. The theoretical parts or discretion of the lesson has its own
importance, but all these are will not completely studied or learnt by CAM. Like
these, a concept is different from a fact, a principle and a generalization.
But all these are included in a lesson.

II
METHODOLOGY
Methodology
refers to the use of different kinds of methods to undertake a study.

USED FOR THE STUDY
For the present study the investigator has used
survey methods.

Tool
used for this study is Questionnaire.

used for this study compared Ten teacher student of Kayamkulam B.ed Centre.

The
above graph and the table shows that most of the teachers used the concept
attained model for the effectiveness of their class and to help the child to
attain concept.
In
helping children learn concepts efficiently, is a fundamental purpose of
schooling. Until recently however most educators did not consciously
distinguish the learning of concept from other type of learning. Today
researches have drived into the meaning of concept, the process of acquiring
them and conditions that facilitates effective learning of concepts.
Concept attainment model has 3 main syntax
1) Presentation of the data and identification of the
concept.
2) Testing
attainment of the concept.
3) Analysis of
the thinking strategies. etc.
Al these 3 stages have it’s own importance to
help the child to attain the concept.
The
above chart shows that traditional method like Lecture Method, Lecture cum
demonstration Method etc are using actively in colleges and school still. So
these method also has importance in teaching but for more effectiveness,
teachers used more models of teaching like, concept attainment model, Inquiry
Training Model, etc for different purpose. The speciality of these model teaching
over traditional method is that creating suitable learning environment.
If a
teacher taught a content through a traditional method the effectiveness of the
content or concept attainment is comparatively less than teach if through
Concept Attainment Model (CAM).

IV
FINDINGS
AND CONCLUSION
From this study we are find out that CAM or Concept
Attainment Model is one of the important and effective teaching method than any
other type of teaching method. But it has its own limitation also. If a teacher
thought a content through a traditional method, the effectiveness of the
content or concept attainment is comparatively less than teach through concept
attainment model. Traditional method like lecture method, lecture cum
demonstration method etc are using actively in colleges and school still. These
methods has more time needed. So most of the teachers used “CAM” like model of teaching.
